Editing: The Brutal Polish
Murder your darlings, then bury them deep. The brutal polish is where the actual writing happens. The first draft is merely you telling the story to yourself; the edit is where you translate it for the world.
Great writing is forged in the crucible of revision. It demands a ruthlessness that many novice writers lack. You must be willing to sever paragraphs you labored over for hours if they do not serve the overarching momentum of the piece.
The Reduction Method
Begin by cutting 10% of your word count. Strip away the adverbs. Replace weak verbs with strong, active ones. 'He ran quickly' becomes 'He sprinted.' This compression creates density, making your prose heavier, more impactful.
Read your work aloud. Your ear will catch the clunky transitions and repetitive phrasing that your eyes gloss over. If you stumble while reading it, the reader will stumble while digesting it. Smooth the edges until the text flows like obsidian glass.
