Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the common frictions encountered in the writing process.
How often should I publish on my blog?
Consistency trumps frequency. Publishing one highly polished, structurally sound essay a week is infinitely better than daily, unedited brain-dumps. Pick a schedule you can maintain for two years without burning out.
What is the biggest mistake novice writers make?
Over-explaining. Trust your reader. If you build the scene correctly, you do not need to tell the reader how the character feels; the action and dialogue will make it obvious.
Do I need to outline before I write?
It is highly recommended for structural integrity. However, some write to discover the plot. If you 'pants' it, prepare to spend significantly more time in the editing phase restructuring the narrative arc.
How do I overcome writer's block?
Stop trying to write well. Give yourself permission to write garbage. The goal is to get words on the page; you can mold garbage into art later. You cannot edit a blank page.
